Ground run-up enclosures (gre)

As communities near airports grow larger and more sensitive to airport noise, ground runup noise has become a major source of noise complaints. However, this type of noise can be easily controlled. A Ground Run-Up Enclosure (GRE) allows airports, airlines and aircraft maintenance companies to appease the local community without compromising the integrity of the engine test or delaying the return of the aircraft to revenue generating service.

Aircraft maintenance often requires high power engine runs. High power engine runs, which are typically as loud as a takeoff and have a much longer duration, are often performed at night when communities near airports are particularly sensitive to noise. Unlike noise generated by departing or approaching aircraft, ground runup noise can be contained thanks to the development of sophisticated GREs. APS pioneered this noise mitigation technology in the 1970’s.

The technology developed by APS consists of a noise protection wall combined with a jet blast deflector. The deflector is positioned immediately behind the aircraft and safely redirects the exhaust gas flow upwards at angles of 40° – 70°, which enables the noise protection wall to be installed directly behind the deflector. The noise protection wall should be installed as close as possible to the source of the noise (engines) in order to achieve maximum results. The height of the noise wall depends on the acoustic performance required. Facilities with 20m walls have been supplied.

In addition to designing GREs, APS also supplies and installs these facilities. Our team of experienced technicians and project managers personally oversee each installation in order to provide the client with timely deliveries and a successful project. APS has been the leading European supplier of GRE technology and continues to implement new designs for today’s challenging applications.

The APS range of GREs includes simple one-sided facilities designed to protect a limited area from runup noise up to complex circular facilities that provide noise protection to a very wide area. The configuration of each project is customized depending on the following factors:

Jet Blast Screen

Jet blast Screens (jBS)

On many airports nowadays, safety zones, terminal buildings, maintenance facilities and other buildings with their access roads or paths encroach ever more closely upon take-off and landing runways and taxiways.
As a result, the putting in place of suitable protection structures has become ever more important. These structures have to be capable of effectively deviating upwards the exhaust gas flow of aircraft engines without giving rise to re-circulation or reflections

Our system ensures that the exhaust gas flow will be effectively deviated upwards at angles of 40 to 70 degrees regardless of whether it impinges on the screen head-on or laterally. This occurs without loss of pressure thereby preventing reflection and re-circulation. A high degree of safety is furthermore provided by its transparency because it enables unrestricted observation from either side.

The standard material for blast and wind protection structures is hot-galvanized steel of outstanding anti-corrosive qualities. Screening can additionally be painted in the desired color at a small extra charge. Materials and execution are in accordance with DIN, ASTM und BS.

Our standardized systems are characterized by short deliveries, simple assembly and disassembly
and allow even re-installation on another site. Adapting an installation to local ground conditions and establishing its height is part of our basic expertise.

MAINTENANCE

To assure the performance and stability of a GRE or JBS it is crucial to carry out regular inspections and maintenance.  With our knowledge and experience we are able to carry out maintenance work for facilities supplied and installed by others. To provide you with a single point of contact, this service can also include the electrical systems or any moving parts like gates. By this we guarantee the usability of a facility and make your life easier.

NOISE MEASUREMENT

APS is able to carry out simple noise measurements in house very cost effectively. This can be a first consultancy, where you have to find out the current noise status or an acceptance measurement for an executed project. If a customer requests third party measurements or measurements in a more complicated environment we often team up with specialized acoustic consultants.

ENGiNEERING

APS is a systems supplier for integrated solutions, which includes, beside the engineering, the supply and often the installation. Nevertheless, there might be reasons where a client is seeking for engineering support only. This might, in example, be the preparation of tender documents on our expertise for repair works. Even other reason might be imaginable. Whatever you need, we are your partner and will be pleased to support you.

common questions

All our fences are custom tailored to the demands of our clients. Some dimensions proofed more cost effective. APS tries to provide solutions based on these experiences.

Lead time strongly depends on the order volume and size of the JBS. As a first estimate we can give 8 weeks for an average project as executed during past years.

APS supplies to airports worldwide. Our reference list names projects in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

APS often supplies concrete foundations with our portable blast screens. To provide an economic solution we cooperate with local precast concrete companies.

APS can provide fiberglass solutions when required.

Size is limited by the maximum load of the available forklift. Economically worthwhile dimensions are a width of 2.5 m and a height of 3,0 m.

Yes. APS supplied many blast screens for military applications including afterburner power setting. Our JBS complies with UFC 3-260-01/2008.

The attenuation depends on many factors, aircraft, distance of IP, wall height, geometry etc. Each GRE has to be calculated in accordance with the requirements.

Key factors are: acoustic attenuation, usability, wind situation, aircraft mix and orientation.
